Apr. 28--The Public Health Trust spurned a request from Baptist Health Systems for help with Homestead Hospital and instead approved a proposal to take control of the financially ailing facility.
The plan would need the approval of Baptist's board and the city of Homestead to become a reality.
Brian Keeley, Baptist's chief executive, said he was surprised by the Trust's proposal.
"I'm very disappointed. We want to stay in there, our employees want us down there," he said. "I think the Public Health Trust clearly doesn't believe in public-private partnerships."
Under the five-year proposal approved by the Trust Wednesday, it would pay the not-for-profit Baptist organization $1 each...
