Apr. 26--BANKATLANTIC PROFITS DROP 12.5 PERCENT IN QUARTER: BankAtlantic Bancorp (BANC), parent of BankAtlantic, Tuesday reported a 12.5 percent decline in earnings compared with the same period in 1999. Net income for the current quarter includes a $3.5 million extraordinary gain from the early extinguishment of debt.

The Fort Lauderdale bank's net interest margin -- the difference between what it earns on loans and investments and pays for deposits and other funds -- declined to 3.07 percent from 3.11 percent because of higher costs of funds for deposits and borrowing.
