Jul. 11--VISIT THE U.S.A. -- AND BRING CASH: Never want to make much money? Go into the travel business.

Not true. Sure, the industry is full of low-paying jobs. But it has lots of high-paying ones also. Today, travel industry employees average slightly higher wages than those of the average private industry employee.

That's from a study by the Travel Industry Association Foundation. Travel and tourism is the second largest private employer and the third largest retailer by dollar volume.

The study, using 1998 data, found:

-- Travel is the largest export industry in this country. But instead of local goods going to other countries, foreign travelers consume them here....
