Cardinals' second baseman sets his sights on being the best player at his position in the majors
ROBERTO ALOMAR AND JEFF KENT hit better than Fernando Vina. But their range might not be as good as Vina's range. Same for Edgardo Alfonzo. Pokey Reese might be a better athlete overall, but he can't turn the double play as well as Vina.
No current second baseman likely turns the double play as well as Vina.
"I'd like to be known as the best at what I do, the top second baseman in the National League--both leagues, actually," Vina said.
Craig Biggio, Jeff Kent, Warren Morris, Eric Young, Damion Easley, and Jose Offerman are among the many talented second basemen in the big leagues. Vina aspires to be considered better than all of them, a player with a wider range of what he can contribute to a team. And that is well within the realm of possibility.
Vina is excellent defensively, a splendid leadoff hitter and an infectious personality.
No one knows what kind of numbers a player will post during a season, but this much is guaranteed: Vina was tremendously enthusiastic as the 2001 season was getting under way.
