Former Brewers slugger appeared on Baseball Digest cover 20 years ago
Twenty summers ago, Cecil Cooper was at the height of his major league career and on the verge of bringing the Brewers their most exciting team in franchise history.
He appeared on the June 1981 cover of Baseball Digest under the lead story "Cecil Cooper: He Would Rather Be No. 1!".
Cooper hit .308 with 106 RBI and an A.L. leading 44 doubles in 1979 pacing the Brewers to 95 wins and a second-place finish in the A.L. East behind the pennant-winning Orioles.
In 1980, Cooper put up MVP numbers by hitting .352 with 219 hits, 25 homers and a league-leading 122 RBI. His performance helped guide the Brewers to 86 victories and a third-place finish, short of their expectations of challenging for the pennant. "It was disappointing but we didn't have the pitching," Cooper said of the 1981 season. "and we didn't play well enough defensively."
The following season, the Brewers were front-runners for the division title, and due to the 1981 player's strike, the season was split into two half seasons. The Brewers made the playoffs by finishing the second half with the A.L.'s best record. Milwaukee lost the divsional ...
