Clock ticking as new regulations send most hospitals searching for best upgrade and purchasing options
* The official message blared eight months ago, but -- unlike the telemetry signals it wants to protect -- it still is not being received clearly.
New federal regulations mean many hospitals have to overhaul their telemetry equipment over the next two years. But many material managers still do not know what they will do about it. All except the most isolated of providers will need at least a system upgrade, whether or not old equipment is worn out. All parties involved in the issue agree hospitals will be facing some big bills.
The problem will not hit all hospitals at the same time. The potential for telemetry interference varies from location to location; some areas will become crowded with new radio or high-definition television signals sooner than others.
