Healthcare directors believe the boom in alternate surgical sites is going to continue, sprouting an even larger outpatient-care industry.

According to SMG Marketing Group, Chicago, surgeries performed at free-standing outpatient surgery centers (FOSC) will increase nearly 30% -- from 7.1 million to 9.2 million -- by 2006. SMG said the most recent statistics showed 3,174 FOSCs in business.

Material management professionals are expected to benefit from the expansion, as large surgical centers will need expertise in every phase of the medical supply chain. No longer "Mom-and-Pop corner stores," some surgical centers on average will purchase more than $2 million in equipment and $1.5 million in disposable supplies yearly,...
