* Unlike their counterparts who sit at the administrative table in other major industries, some hospital material managers feel left out of the decision-making core of upper-echelon executives.

A recent white paper commented on the topic, noting that material managers traditionally have been overly concerned with buying products at lowest costs. This sole preoccupation with price limits one's ability to examine and enhance other links in the hospital supply chain, wrote Lynn James Everard in "Blueprint for an Efficient Health Care Supply Chain."

"One of the clearest indications of this is the fact that precious few materials managers find themselves occupying senior level management positions in hospitals and health systems," he added.
