CBS BEGINS SEARCH FOR RATHER'S SUCCESSOR

When CBS and Dan Rather announced Tuesday that Rather would leave the "CBS Evening News" early next year, the network didn't mention who would take his place.

CBS obviously wanted the focus to be on Rather and his 24 years as anchor, which for the most part it has been. But speculation as to who will sit behind the anchor desk when Rather leaves in March is already running high.

The front-runner, according to a number of media reports, is John Roberts, CBS' chief White House correspondent and the anchor of the Sunday "Evening News." Scott Pelley, a correspondent "60 Minutes," is also considered a candidate.
