Nov. 22--Electronic Data Systems Corp.'s landmark contract with the U.S. Navy was touted in 2000 as a state-of-the-art deal that would revolutionize government computer work and cement EDS' return to prominence.

One out of two ain't bad. Instead of basking in glory, Plano-based EDS is still struggling to prove it can handle the contract.

But the experience has indeed altered the way computer services firms design contracts with the federal government and other clients.

The trick is to forge a contract that holds the computer services company accountable without driving it to an untimely death. No one wants to go through what EDS went through.
