I arrived at Madrid's Chamartin station four hours early. The price for successfully navigating the subway while under the influence of jetlag. (My plane from Miami had touched down at Barajas Airport a mere 90 minutes earlier.) I stood in line _ it was the middle of August, the height of Spain's vacation season _ and bought a one-way ticket to Santiago de Compostela. Then, to taste the country I had so far been deprived of seeing, I ordered a tortilla espagnole at a station cafe.
