According to recently released survey results, many doctors may not have enough information about Long QT Syndrome, a potentially fatal disorder of the heart's electrical system, to protect patients from developing the condition.

Although doctors say they are familiar with Long QT, the survey suggests they do not fully understand its symptoms or who is at risk.

Long QT is associated with heart rhythm disorders and is becoming an increasingly urgent problem as widely prescribed drugs, such as the heartburn agent Propulsid and the antihistamine Seldane, are removed from the market. Other QT prolonging drugs, such as the antipsychotic Mellaril, remain available but are restricted, and new medications containing bold warnings about risks associated with Long QT are...
