Nov. 19--TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Setting the stage for a showdown with the Florida Legislature, the new group that oversees Florida's public universities flexed its political muscles Thursday and asserted that it alone has the power to set tuition rates across the state.
Florida's Board of Governors, created just two years ago by a constitutional amendment approved by voters, also said that Florida State University must get its approval for a new chiropractic college, even though lawmakers this spring approved the college's creation and guaranteed it $9 million a year.
