Nov. 19--Southwest Airlines chief executive Gary Kelly has lit a match under one of the region's most incendiary political issues: Should airlines be able to fly long flights from Dallas Love Field?
Mr. Kelly's recent opposition to a federal law limiting those flights reopens a civic wound. Already, familiar battle lines have formed.
Here are some common questions and answers about the latest chapter in this North Texas saga.
QUESTION: Remind me again, what is the law?
ANSWER: The 25-year-old Wright amendment limits flights from Dallas Love Field to Texas' adjoining states for planes with more than 56 seats.
A counterpart, the 1997 Shelby amendment, allows flights to Mississippi, Alabama and Kansas.
The law reflects a compromise for the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth and Southwest Airlines Co., which has its headquarters at Love Field and didn't want to move to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
