As the workforce becomes more entrenched in technology, ergonomic injuries have been on the rise.
A majority of employees work with computers on a daily basis. Although most employers are aware of the risks of carpal tunnel syndrome as a result of keyboard use, many overlook the importance of visual ergonomics.
Visual health issues arise among up to 75 percent of all office workers, many of whom spend several hours a day staring at their computer monitors. Eye strain has also become a significant occupational risk factor for workers performing video display terminal-based work, near work or small-part assembly. Typical symptoms of eye strain include dryness, redness and irritation. All of these signs are described by optometrists as asthenopia -- a general term for visual distress to the ocular or external system of the eye.
Visual complaints
Prolonged use of video display terminals can lead to loss of focus and difficulty in the eye's ability to transmit accurate signals to the brain. The three main categories of visual complaints are:
