Much of the focus on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's ergonomics standard has been placed on private industry. However, federal employees are just as likely to develop musculoskeletal disorders.

Nearly 17,000 injuries resulting from repetitive action were reported among federal workers in 1999 -- over 3,000 of which were related to carpal tunnel syndrome. Although the OSHA standard would apply to federal agencies, they cannot be fined for violations.

Howard Egerman, national health and safety representative for the American Federation of Government Employees, believes that just because agencies cannot be fined doesn't eliminate the need for ergonomic protection.
