FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ Most of us will never get a chance to have a face-to-face conversation with the editor of our favorite design magazine.

The only way we can scratch the veneer to see what he or she is like underneath is through the "Letter to Readers" column.

Some editors use the column as a space to preview the magazine's contents or to give some behind-the-scenes insight. Others use it as an opportunity to brag about which celebrity they met at which cocktail party.

Only a few do it right, giving us a glimpse into how they actually live in their homes with their families. These are the editors who humanize design and appear as if even they can feel our pain in choosing a paint color or finding the most comfortable sofa for the family room.
