Wireless local area networks, or WLANs, have won over businesses and consumers. Now they face their next challenge: supporting video transmissions.
The networks, which typically rely on Wi-Fi technology, are great for checking e-mail and surfing the Net. But some WLAN users have loftier goals. They'd like to watch movies and other video without being tethered to a network.
"There are not many companies or consumers that are running full-motion video over their WLANs right now, but there is a growing number of them who have begun to think about taking that step," said Greg Collins, an industry analyst with market research firm Dell'Oro Group.
