Fencing changed Peter Westbrook's life. And he wanted to do the same for others.
Westbrook grew up in the Newark, N.J., projects. Discovering fencing as a teen gave him a ticket out.
He used it as a positive outlet for his anger and became a 13-time national champion of the sport.
Why not show other inner-city kids how to do the same thing?
It wasn't going to be a walk in the park. Westbrook took the right steps, setting up a foundation in 1991 in Harlem to educate children about fencing. He decided to let his instincts overrule any misgivings.
"If I just went by what I saw from the naked eye, I wouldn't have tried this," Westbrook said in a recent interview. "I couldn't have seen where kids would get scholarships to private high schools and universities. I just go by faith and this is my calling."
