How often can you look back 10, 20 or 30 years, much less 70, and say that something is working as good, if not better, than the day it was put into operation? Well, that is exactly what one can say about the Foreign Trade Zones Program. The Foreign-Trade Zones Act was passed in 1934 as a part of President Roosevelt's New Deal. The program was intended to relieve the impact of the Great Depression and stimulate economic growth and development in the United States. Not only did accomplish what it was intended to do in the 1930s, but 70 years later it continues to be an extremely important tool for managing the global competitiveness of U.S. companies today.
