MINNEAPOLIS _ As he tries to rally his football team in the wake of another deflating defeat, Glen Mason must wonder what steps must be taken for the Minnesota program to join the Big Ten Conference's elite.
In his first seven seasons as head coach at Minnesota, Mason failed to guide the Gophers to a top-three Big Ten finish. Minnesota's best finish under Mason was a tie for fourth, in 1999 and again last season.
A stunning 30-21 loss to Indiana last week means the Gophers probably won't crack the top three this season, either. The Gophers are alone in sixth place at 3-3 entering their rivalry game against the University of Wisconsin (8-0, 5-0), ranked No. 4 in the coaches' poll and No. 5 in the writers' poll, Saturday in Madison.
