MEXICO CITY _ As the U.S. presidential election nears, Mexicans are watching closely, many concerned about the impact the outcome may have on their country.
For many Mexicans, analysts say, the key question is which candidate, President Bush or Sen. John Kerry, can best deliver long-awaited immigration changes that would allow Mexican workers to cross borders legally.
Officially Mexico has no position on the election or preference for a particular candidate.
"The position of the Mexican government is that the bilateral relationship is so important that it should transcend party lines and administrations on either side of the border," said Geronimo Gutierrez, deputy minister for North American affairs in Mexico's Foreign Ministry.
