CHICAGO _ Dress it up any way you like, the Chicago Bears simply were the lesser of two evils Sunday night in a 23-13 victory over San Francisco in a game between two of the NFL's ugliest teams.
But there was no disguising the relief and joy all over the faces of the Bears as they celebrated their first victory in 42 days.
Rookie cornerback Nathan Vasher sealed the win with a 71-yard runback of an interception for a touchdown with 3:52 left to play.
The Halloween night affair in Soldier Field provided its share of eerie moments, the first coming when Paul Edinger made a 52-yard field goal in the second quarter only because it bounced over the crossbar.
As if not to be outdone, San Francisco kicker Todd Peterson ricocheted a 51-yarder off the opposite crossbar seven minutes later.
Both teams, 1-5 coming in, continued to be haunted by inexperience and injury.
