CHICAGO _ Dan Galante remembers what he saw on game days at St. Patrick High School when he watched Tim McGarigle preparing.
"When you get him on the field, he kind of ... changes," said Galante, who coached St. Pat's for McGarigle's senior season. "Even his face changes. I finally told him, `Tim, some nights you scare me.'"
McGarigle laughs at Galante's recollection. But then, it's not game day. Because on game day, there just aren't many laughs around Northwestern's junior linebacker.
There certainly are none around Purdue after McGarigle led the Northwestern defense in holding down one of the nation's top offenses in Saturday's 13-10 victory.
He racked up a career-high 21 tackles, eight of them solos, and broke up a pass.
McGarigle was named Division I-A national defensive player of the week by the Walter Camp Football Foundation. He is tied with Ohio State's A.J. Hawk for the Big Ten lead at 12.6 tackles per game.
