PALM HARBOR, Fla. _ Vijay Singh became golf's first $10 million man by winning Sunday's Chrysler Championship at the Westin Innisbrook Resort, but when you ask him about the money, he can't help laughing.
That's because it doesn't seem that long ago that he had to work odd jobs to supplement his golf income.
His ninth PGA Tour victory this season came with a $900,000 paycheck.
If that wasn't enough, he was informed afterward that he won the PGA Tour's Fall Finish, a bonus worth $500,000 for playing better than anybody else over 11 tournaments at year's end.
Singh chuckles because he remembers when he was so financially deprived coming up as a young pro that he once wore the same pair of brown pants for four rounds and tried to use the same golf ball an entire tournament. He played shots away from water.
"It's been unbelievable," Singh said. "It was a struggle. I wouldn't like to go back there, but I've learned so much. It's like a miracle that I'm sitting up here with $10 million and nine wins in a season."
