NEW YORK _ When the Jets and Dolphins met at the beginning of October, the victory was secured by New York on a fourth-quarter interception by Donnie Abraham. But when push comes to shove, the Dolphins' defense will be focused on grounding one Jet in particular.
"Mr. Martin," said Dolphins defensive tackle Bryan Robinson, referring to four-time Pro Bowl Jets tailback Curtis Martin. "We felt like we contained him, but he had a couple of runs that got out of hand.
"He'll be the No. 1 guy. Of course, the quarterback (Chad Pennington) is playing really well ... moving the ball with real consistency, keeping the chains moving, but it comes down to Curtis Martin."
Martin, 31, seemingly getting better with age, has gained 683 yards _ second most in the NFL _ on 4.5 yards per carry with six touchdowns. In the Oct. 3 17-9 Jets' victory over the Dolphins, Martin opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown before finishing with 110 yards on 24 carries.
In addition to his four 100-yard outings this season, Martin has 22 receptions to lead the NFL with 48 first downs as well as conversions of third-and-1 situations (6).
Martin trails Steelers bruising tailback Jerome Bettis by (65 yards) as the seventh most prolific runner in NFL history. The Dolphins are ranked 27th against the run, and have allowed 100 yards or more to four different rushers this season.
