CHICAGO _ Wisconsin's climb to the national championship Orange Bowl is not as steep as it was 48 hours ago. For that the Badgers can thank North Carolina for shocking Miami, 31-28, and Maryland for dispatching Florida State, 20-17.
But it's still a long, long way to the top.
Wisconsin moved up to No. 4 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, but the writers in the Associated Press poll were not so kind. The majority preferred California, so the Bears leapfrogged Wisconsin to No. 4, one step in front of the Badgers.
It will be interesting to get the computers' take on Cal when the Bowl Championship Series releases its new rankings Monday. Cal's computer rank last week was just 14th, but that should get a boost after the Bears slammed previously 20th-ranked Arizona State, 27-0, on Saturday night.
So even if two of the nation's top three teams _ Southern Cal, Oklahoma and Auburn _lose, the Badgers still might need Cal (6-1) to fall again to clear their path to the Orange Bowl.
And let's not forget, the Badgers have to win out. That won't be easy. Minnesota brings its Jekyll-and-Hyde offense to Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday. Then the Badgers finish with back-to-back roadies against Michigan State and No. 20 Iowa.
