Children of women who smoked after the fourth month of pregnancy have greater independent risks of developing early-onset diabetes and obesity said Scott M. Montgomery, Ph.D., and Anders Ekbom, Ph.D., of the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm.

Of 4,917 children, 28 developed early-onset type 2 diabetes between the ages of 16 and 33. Nine of the children were born to mothers who smoked at least 10 cigarettes per day. These children had a significant relative risk of developing diabetes that was about four times greater than children born to mothers who did not smoke, after adjustment for possible confounders.
