LOS ANGELES -- The largest study to date of labor induction with misoprostol for twin gestations found the drug to be as safe and effective as oxytocin, Dr. Melissa Bush reported in a poster presentation at the annual meeting of the Society for Gynecologic Investigation.
Multiple gestations often require labor induction for delivery necessitated by intrauterine growth restriction, growth discordance, or preeclampsia. Many clinicians hesitate to use misoprostol in these cases because of the paucity of data on its safety.
The investigators analyzed records for all women undergoing labor induction at one institution over a 4-year period for term twin gestations with twin A presenting in a vertex position. Fifty-seven women were given misoprostol, and 77 received oxytocin in the nonrandomized, retrospective study.
