SARASOTA, FLA. -- Severe nausea and vomiting in pregnancy can be significantly reduced with a simple vitamin [B.sub.6] supplement, according to one expert.
In fact, nonpharmacologic remedies are the best first-line treatment for this condition, Dr. Jennifer R. Niebyl advised at a perinatal symposium sponsored by Symposia Medicus.
She pointed to a study that she and her associates conducted in which 59 pregnant patients with nausea and vomiting were randomized to receive 25-mg tablets every 8 hours for 72 hours of either pyridoxine HCl (vitamin [B.sub.6]) or placebo (Obstet. Gynecol. 78[1]:33-36, 1991).
A total of 74% of the treated patients stopped vomiting after 3 days of therapy, compared with 46% of the placebo group, a significant reduction, said Dr. Niebyl, who is professor and head of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Iowa, Iowa City.
The treatment was most effective in patients reporting severe nausea but had no effect on mild nausea.
