The rate of labor inductions in the United States doubled from 1990 to 1998, reported Dr. Jun Zhang of the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md., and associates.
Labor inductions increased from 9.5% of all births nationwide in 1990 to 19.4% in 1998. If women who underwent elective cesarean deliveries or had contraindicatins to induction were not included, the overall rate in 1998 would have been almost 23% (J. Reprod. Med. 47[2]:120-24, 2002).
