SAN DIEGO -- A study of six cytokines in blood and peritoneal fluid identified two that could compose the first nonsurgical tool for diagnosing endometriosis.
Investigators compared concentrations of the six cytokines-interleukin -- 1[beta] (IL-1[beta]), IL-6, IL-8, IL-12, IL-13, and tumor necrosis factor-[alpha] (TNF[alpha])--in blood and peritoneal fluid obtained from women undergoing diagnostic laparoscopy for pain, infertility, tubal ligation, or sterilization reversal.
Only serum IL-6 and pentoneal fluid TNF-[alpha] showed a high sensitivity and specificity in differentiating the 56 women given a postsurgical diagnosis of endometriosis from the 8 women diagnosed with unexplained infertility and from the control group of 27 women who underwent tubal ligation or reanastomosis, Dr. Mohamed A. Bedaiwy said at the World Congress on Endometriosis.
Serum IL-6 concentrations of 2 pg/mL or higher diagnosed endometriosis with a sensitivity of 90% and a specificity of 67%. With a cut-off value of 7.5 pg/mL, the sensitivity was 80% and the ...
