Smoking and a large number of lesions are the most significant factors associated with an increased risk of developing varicella zoster virus pneumonia in pregnancy reported Dr. James. H. Harger of the University of Pittsburgh and his colleagnes.
Pregnant women who smoked at the time of infection were 5.5 times more likely to develop viral pneumonia than those who did not smoke. The number of lesions was also a significant predictor; women with more than 100 vesicles were 17 times as likely to develop pneumonia as those with fewer than 100 vesicles (J. Infect. Dis. 185[4]:422-27, 2002).
