CHICAGO _ The Guardian newspaper in London got more than it bargained for when it invited its readers to send letters to potential voters in Clark County, Ohio, a district in a crucial swing state.
As part of its "US Elections 2004" coverage, the newspaper announced what it called "a unique experiment" _ namely, offering "a democratic toolkit to enable people from Basildon to Botswana to campaign in the presidential race."
The object was to give non-Americans a say in the U.S. presidential election that "will affect the lives of millions around the world but those of us outside the 50 states have had no say in it."
