Anxiety disorders are often unrecognized and untreated by primary care physicians, Risa Weisberg, Ph.D., reported in a poster session at the annual meeting of the Association for Advancement of Behavior Therapy.
Preliminary results of a longitudinal study of 500 primary care patients with anxiety disorders showed that 50% of symptomatic patients were neither treated by their primary care physician, nor referred to a mental health professional for further assessment or treatment.
Patients with comorbid depression and anxiety disorder, however, were more likely to receive treatment. That they reported significantly worse functioning and significantly greater levels of impairment--perhaps making their dysfunction more noticeable--could explain this difference in recognition, Dr. Weisberg said.
