The American Medical Association and three federal agencies have launched an initiative aimed at getting physicians to make food-borne illness a priority.

The AMA has released a novel "primer" for physicians to aid in the diagnosis and management of food-borne illness. Physicians are urged to report all cases of suspected food-borne illness to public health authorities and to educate at-risk patients about safe food preparation and handling, Dr. J. Edward Hill, a family physician from Tupelo, Miss., said at a conference on food-borne illness sponsored by the AMA.
