Hospitalized premature male infants who had not been circumcised had an increased incidence of recurrent urinary tract infections, reported Dr. Dana L. Cason and her associates at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta.
Premature infants already have an increased chance of recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI).
The prevalence of UTI ranges from 0.1% to 1.0% in term infants and from 4% to 25% in premature infants. In retrospective cohort studies by other investigators, uncircumcised males were found to have a 10- to 20-fold higher risk of UTI in the first few months of life.
