The rate of venous thromboembolism in a London population was more frequent postnatally than prenatally and increased in the presence of several risk factors, reported Dr. E.L. Simpson and associates at Postgraduate Medical School in Surrey, England.
The researchers identified 336 cases of venous thromboembolism (VTE) among 395,335 pregnancies in a London maternity database during the years 1988-1997.
Of the VTE cases, 227 were postnatal, and 109 were prenatal. The 29 cases that involved both prenatal and postnatal events were analyzed with the postnatal events. Cases were compared with unmatched controls who did not have a history of VTE.
