RENO, NEV. -- Treatment of asymptomatic bacterial vaginosis with metronidazole did not significantly decrease the rates of acquisition of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia during pregnancy in a study that was presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
The finding of abnormal vaginal flora has been associated with an increased risk of acquiring sexually transmitted diseases; restoration of normal flora has been presumed to be protective.
But in this 4-year, double-blind study, treatment of bacterial vaginosis (BV) did not prevent the development of symptomatic STDs, commented Dr. Jeanne S. Sheffield of the maternal fetal medicine unit of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Bethesda, Md.
The study, presented in poster form, included 1,798 pregnant women with asymptomatic BV who were randomized to receive metronidazole (two doses of 2 g each) or placebo between 16 and 24 weeks' gestation and again between 24 and 30 weeks' gestation.
