SAN ANTONIO -- The good news for fans of complementary and alternative medicine is that soy phytoestrogens have consistently achieved a moderate reduction in hot flashes in women with breast cancer in 13 clinical trials.
Now for the bad news: in 6 of the 13 trials, placebo was at least as effective as soy, Dr. Cheri Van Patten said at a breast cancer symposium sponsored by the San Antonio Cancer Institute.
She presented the results of the latest study in which she and her coworkers assigned 123 postmenopausal women with breast cancer to 2 cups/day of a soy drink containing 90 mg of phytoestrogens or to a placebo rice-based beverage for 12 weeks.
The results: patients on soy experienced a 30% reduction in their 24-hour hot flash score, defined as the intensity multiplied by the frequency of hot flashes. Those on placebo had a 40% reduction. The difference between the two groups was not statistically significant, according to Dr. Van Patten of the British Columbia Cancer Agency, Vancouver.
