Use of 'very low doses' advocated.

RENO, NEV. -- Increased maternal magnesium levels were associated with neonatal intraventricular hemorrhage among 90 women whose pregnancies were complicated by preterm labor.

Magnesium is the most commonly used tocolytic agent in the United States. Its safety and efficacy however, have never been "properly demonstrated," and-- based on the findings of this study--"the prevalence of its use should be severely curtailed," Dr. Robert Mittendorf said at the annual meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

In a poster session, Dr. Mittendorf of Loyola University Chicago, Maywood, Ill., and his colleagues presented a new analysis of data from the Magnesium and Neurologic Endpoints Trial (Mag-NET). The analysis showed that IVH was significantly associated with increased maternal magnesium serum levels among 90 mother-baby pairs.
