Double the recommended fiber intake, and you'll lower daily plasma glucose levels by 10% in patients with type 2 diabetes, reported Dr. Manisha Chandalia of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, and associates.
The American Diabetes Association recommends daily intake of 20-35 g of fiber because of its influence on cholesterol levels. Fiber's ability to lower serum glucose concentrations has been considered to be inconsequential.
The investigators studied 13 obese type 2 diabetic patients with a mean body mass index of 32.
At study enrollment, 10 were taking glyburide. Their dose was not changed during the study.
