Proton pump inhibitors excel over hista[mine.sub.2]-receptor blockers when it comes to rapid and long-lasting symptomatic relief of gastroesophageal reflux disease.
The findings of a major new metaanalysis, sponsored by Abbott Laboratories, indicate that 8 weeks of acute treatment for heartburn using a high-dose proton pump inhibitor (PPI) provide patients with roughly 3 more weeks of symptom-free days than do 8 weeks of a standard-dose [H.sub.2]-receptor antagonist ([H.sub.2]RA), Dr. John K. Marshall reported during the annual meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology in New York.
And for long-term maintenance therapy, patients on a PPI have a 17% rate of heartburn recurrence over 12 months, compared with a 45% rate of recurrence with [H.sub.2]RA maintenance therapy and a 66% relapse rate with placebo, said Dr. Marshall of McMaster University Hamilton, ...
