TORONTO -- Pharmacologic treatment of schizophrenia must be adjusted during and immediately following pregnancy Dr. Mary Seeman said at a conference on schizophrenia sponsored by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.
Pregnancy among women with schizophrenia who are treated with neuroleptics is a relatively new, but rapidly increasing, phenomenon, said Dr. Seeman, chair of the Women's Clinic for Psychosis at the center.
Neuroleptic drugs no longer interfere with menstruation or fertility by raising prolactin levels as they once did. As a result, the birth rate among women with schizophrenia now compares with rates seen among the general population, she explained.
