ORLANDO, FLA. -- The benefits of laparoscopic hysterectomy in an outpatient setting were lauded in several presentations at the annual meeting of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.
In one study, outpatient laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy was found to be safe in 169 women with myomas, abnormal uterine bleeding, dysmenorrhea, or failure of endometrial ablation, according to Dr. Rolf P. Lueken of the Center for Gynecological Endoscopy in Hamburg, Germany.
The patients, aged 30-50, underwent laparoscopic surgery for a mean of 70 minutes, and most were released within 8 hours. The complication rate was 1.1%, and complications included one ureter in jury, which was repaired immediately, and one conversion to laparotomy due to insufficient unilateral ligature of the uterine vessel, Dr. Lueken said.
In a second study, a low complication rate was also reported for 79 women who underwent outpatient laparoscopic hysterectomy for similar indications, with only two intraoperative complications and four postoperative complications occurring.
Intraoperative complications included one ureter injury, which was easily repaired with a stent, and inability to seal a uterine artery which resulted in substantial blood loss.
