Los ANGELES -- Results from the first study of its kind suggest that women with localization-related epilepsy have an increased risk for developing premature ovarian failure, according to Dr. Adriana Serje.
This finding should be considered when counseling epileptic women about family planning, said Dr. Serje, a resident in the department of neurology at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington.
She and her associate at Georgetown, Dr. Pavel Klein, evaluated 41 consecutive cognitively normal women with epilepsy aged 38-58 years whose seizures began before the age of 44. None had a history of radiation or chemotherapy, according to data presented in poster form at the annual meeting of the American Epilepsy Society.
Endocrine studies included a serum FSH (done on menstrual cycle day 3 in menstruating women) and inhibin levels when FSH was normal. Premature menopause was defined as secondary amenorrhea of greater than 12 months' duration with elevated FSH in women less than 45 years old.
