FedEx and UPS have an undeniable advantage over DHL in the United States: the incumbent U.S. players already have a fully developed infrastructure in place and proven operational strategies for moving cargo in the world s largest express and parcel market. But DHL insists it is working "in a rapid fashion" to close the infrastructure gap and will be able to compete on even footing with FedEx and UPS in the operators' home market by the end of 2005.

Deutsche Post World Net-controlled DHL this year is making a serious push into the United States, touting itself as a third alternative to well-established American integrators FedEx and UPS. The company launched a full-scale advertising blitz on U.S. television and its signature yellow delivery vans are becoming more and more visible on the streets of American cities. …
