Combining natural flavonoids can allow greater protection against cancer than the same compounds taken separately.
A new study reports that sulforaphane and the polyphenol apigenin work synergistically to lower the risk of cancer. Their combined protective effect is 12-fold the total effect of the two antioxidants taken separately.
Apigenin is a natural flavonoid present in fruits and vegetables such as apples, beans, broccoli, celery, cherries, grapes, leeks, onions, parsley and tomatoes, as well as in plant-derived beverages such as tea and wine. Sulforaphane is found in broccoli and in other brassica vegetables.
