Here's a quiz to test your knowledge of the rules

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN umpiring in the major leagues? Can you handle the heat between the foul lines? Before you really get involved, you better be able to answer at least nine of the ten true or false questions that follow. If you get seven or eight correct answers, you might be minor league material. If you score six or less, enroll in a local clinic as soon as possible and don't tell anyone that you took this quiz.

Okay, number your paper 1 to 10. Hope you make all the right calls.

1. The Royals have Joe Randa on third and one out when Jermaine Dye hits a long fly ball foul down the third base line near the wall 300 feet from home plate. Bobby Higginson, the Tigers' left fielder, is under the ball preparing to make the catch when the ball is touched by a fan reaching out of the stands. The ball falls uncaught while Randa tags up and scores. The umpires rule Dye out because of spectator interference but properly allow Randa to score because of the distance from home plate to where the interference occurred. True or False?

2. The A's have Miguel Tejada on third with two outs and no count on Eric Chavez. The A's third baseman takes ball one as Tejada attempts to steal home plate on the pitch. As Devil Rays' catcher Mike DiFelice is about to tag Tejada, who is sliding into the plate, Chavez interferes with DiFelice's attempt to tag the runner The umpire rules interference on the play and correctly calls Chavez out because there were two outs at the time the interference took place. True or False?

3. In the late innings of a close game between the Expos and Cardinals, the Expos have Jose Vidro on third base. To guard against a passed ball or wild pitch, Cards' manager Tony LaRussa brings in J.D. Drew to play behind catcher Mike Matheny and the umpire. Expos' manager Felipe Alou argues that this is illegal but the umps do the right thing by allowing Drew to play behind Matheny in foul territory. True or False?

4. The Yankees' Jorge Posada is batting with a 3-1 count when manager Joe Torre emerges from the dugout and points out to the ump that Shane Spencer should be the batter. Torre summons Spencer to replace Posada and inherit the 3-1 count. The umpire makes the right decision by allowing this exchange. True or False?
