Oct. 20--Top federal health officials vigorously defended the Bush administration's response to the flu vaccine shortage Tuesday while announcing that another 2.6 million doses will be available in January.

"No president and administration has invested more to protect [the public] against the flu than this one," Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said at a news conference. "President Bush has invested more in research, development and acquisition of flu vaccines and medicine than any president in our nation's history in an effort to revitalize a deteriorated flu vaccine marketplace and better protect the American people."
